Comtrade’s Software for NATO’s Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) System
POSTED ON 20.12.2016
Ljubljana, December 2016 – Comtrade developed a software solution for NATO Alliance Ground Surveillance (AGS) System as an industrial partner of Airbus Defence and Space under the surveillance of Slovenian Government Quality Assurance (GQA). The solution is a part of the Mobile General Ground Station (MGGS) component of the AGS System which enables persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance over wide areas with the use of Remotely Piloted Aircrafts (RPAs).
The NATO-owned and operated AGS Core capability provides long range, wide-area ground surveillance utilizing sensors on board of Remotely Piloted Aircrafts (RPAs) operating at a very high altitude. The AGS Core provides continuous near-real-time data on friendly, neutral, and opposing ground forces under all weather conditions using advanced radar detection technology and other sensors.
The AGS Core system is composed of an air segment, various transportable and mobile ground stations and a support segment. The Mobile General Ground Station (MGGS) includes several solutions consisting of an exploitation component (MGEC) and a communication component (MGCC). The MGEC is installed in an easily deployable truck-loaded shelter. It has the capability to request, process, store, correlate, display, analyse and exploit GMTI and SAR data as well as other sensor data and exploited products. In addition, the MGEC provides the ability to receive sensor data and distribute data and information either directly from/to connected interoperable NATO and/or national C3I systems through various communication networks or indirectly through the MGCC.
Comtrade’s software engineers developed an export/import formatter (e/iF) for various NATO’s geospatial Standardization Agreements (STANAGs) together with the simulators used for the military equipment testbed. They have also contributed to the new database design used by the solution. In August 2016, the solution passed formal software acceptance.
“We are very proud to be a part of the AGS Programme, which we joined thanks to our knowledge and experience. It is precisely this kind of challenge that brings out the best in all of us at Comtrade. By using the latest technologies and our engineering expertise, we managed to secure a new domain and successfully finished Comtrade’s part in this complex project for NATO,” said Alexis Lope-Belo, CEO of Comtrade Group.
“The success of such a complex program is not the success of a single person – only a team can accomplish such a challenge. ‘WE’ have acted as an integrated project team regardless of intercultural distinctions. Together we managed the long design and paper stage before our engineers could start on what they live for – developing and producing software and hardware,” stated Marc Paskowski, Airbus Defence and Space AGS Program Manager, during the roll-out of the first MGGS system.
Krištof F. Lapanja, official in charge of managing individual projects at the Ministry of Defence and the National representative on the NAGSMO Board of Directors, said:
”The AGS Programme is a unique approach for the Alliance in acquiring NATO capabilities and when delivered it will be operated by all Alliance members. To this end, the Ministry has studied the AGS Programme Capability Package in detail and evaluated the capacity of Slovenian companies to participate in such a complex and extensive project. The Comtrade team that was selected to design and develop the product has turned out to be knowledgeable, reliable and able to deliver all the milestones on time. Cooperation between the Ministry of Defence and Comtrade happened across multiple levels and was in the interest of both parties. We believe that by participating in the AGS Programme, new opportunities for successful defence projects opened up for the company.”
